Simple definition of enzyme
WebbEnzymes are biological catalysts. Just like other catalysts, they reduce activation energy, allowing reactions to proceed in a desired direction. Because their activity is dependent on the folding of a protein, they are usually sensitive to the temperature, pH, and salt concentration of the environment they work in. WebbEnzymes are protein molecules that fulfill an important function: allowing chemical reactions to take place in living beings, and also in the environments close to where they develop. Enzymes act as anchor matrices for the compounds to be processed (called “substrates”), which are modified to give rise to new compounds, called “products”.
